Wiring the Cluster Harness

Terminal Wires

The new cluster is ready to be plugged in. There's power coming to the (+) terminal from the cluster's PCB, but I still have to route a dedicated ground wire and the tachometer rpm wire. For an OEM look and PnP usability, I plugged these wires directly to the cluster's signal connector.

Donor Wires

I went to a wrecking yard and got these "donor" wires to augment the connector in context. The cashier let me have them for free.

"Blue" Connector Extra Instrumentation

The cluster plugs into a "blue" and "brown" connector inside the dashboard.

Pry out the black tab and wiggle the blue connector out. Pry the blue tabs and pull back the blue connector "jacket." Push the little white tabs to remove the left white plastic insert that tensions the wires. I did all this with a pencil.

Insert the new wires into terminals 3 and 4. Test the installation with minimal reassembly then wrap the connector back together.

Ground and RPM Signal Connection

Connect the ground as far as possible from the grounds of the other accessories. How far? If the tacho is reacting to a turn signal relays then the ground is too close.

Remove the carpet cowl on the passenger side to get good access to the ECU. Locate the 16-pin connector, second from the bottom. Unplug it and insert the rpm signal wire (blue in the foreground) into terminal 31 - the white wire - and insert the connector back.

This terminal is the same as the blue connector by the firewall.
